What is the BioHorizon Impact Score?™ The BioHorizon Impact Score is a ranking between 0 and 100. It represents our assessment of the impact that an emerging drug, device, or diagnostic test will have on health services delivery.

The BioHorizon Emerging Health Technology Impact Score methodology allows us to determine the anticipated degree of impact (Low, Moderate or High) of an emerging technology. Clients can use this designation as a tool to determine priorities for further health technology assessments.

Using the BioHorizon Impact Score methodology, we evaluate technologies based on the following key variables: efficacy, burden of illness, predicted demand/diffusion/direct cost, and innovation status. Each variable is assigned a value in a predetermined range using established criteria, and our model generates an impact score between 0 and 100. Generally speaking, technologies scoring less than 40 are considered Low Impact, those between 40 and 59 are considered Moderate Impact, and those above 60 are considered High Impact.

BioHorizon is your premiere source for objective emerging health technology surveillance and preliminary analysis. The practice of medicine and the delivery of health services are continually shaped by technological innovation. Emerging drugs, devices, and diagnostic tests are not only important cost drivers, they significantly shape patient and provider perceptions concerning quality of care. Emerging technologies are therefore a source of risk, financial and otherwise, for any health services organization.

The BioHorizon team is committed to offering impartial and objective analyses of emerging technologies in order to assist our clients in mitigating risk and in taking appropriate technology assessment actions. BioHorizon uses the BioHorizon Impact Score™ methodology, an innovative analytical framework designed to evaluate emerging technologies, assess their anticipated degree of impact, and make recommendations to our clients. We do not accept advertising or incentives from any company appearing in our database or reports. Our goal is to offer our clients objective analyses of emerging health technologies and to make impartial recommendations concerning the initiation of internal, organization specific, health technology assessment activities.

How do we determine the BioHorizon Impact Score™ for a particular technology?
In order to determine the BioHorizon Impact Score, we focus our analysis on four core areas: Efficacy, Burden of Illness, Predicted Demand/Diffusion/Direct Cost, and Innovation Status. A value is assigned to each core variable according to established predetermined criteria and our model generates a value between 0 and 100. Generally, technologies scoring from 0 to 39 are considered Low Impact, those scoring 40 to 59 are considered Moderate Impact and those scoring 60 to 100 are considered High Impact.

Understanding the BioHorizon Impact Score
Technologies scoring between 0 and 39 are generally considered Low Impact. They are anticipated to have minimal impact on health services programs if commercialized. We rarely advise client action for technologies with this designation.

Health technologies scoring between 40 and 59 are considered Moderate Impact. These technologies may have a significant impact on specific program areas and clients may be advised to undertake preliminary assessment activities in anticipation of commercialization.

Those technologies scoring between 60 and 100 are considered High Impact and are expected to have significant impact on health programs if commercialized. They are effective, innovative, resource intense, address highly prevalent, serious conditions and are likely to change the practice of medicine; they may become the 'gold standard' for management of the disease in question. We often advise clients to consider these technologies in the organization's formal risk management process.
